It’s been a rough few days. We did get our HHE shipments, which was great, but on that same day, it was as if the stars aligned…in a really bad way. There was a bombing at a very popular Hindu shrine in central Bangkok on Monday evening, which left 20 dead and over 100 injured.
We are getting all of our stuff tomorrow. I think my heart skipped a bit when my husband forwarded the email to me, confirming that, yes – they really did want to schedule delivery of not one, but both of our HHEs! After I came back down to earth, I realized that maybe it was a little ridiculous that I was so excited to receive stuff. Some of which we haven’t seen in a year, which begs the question – do we really even need it??
The other day, M tells me that his boss has offered him first dibs on taking a Friday and the subsequent Monday off from work. He actually asked me whether or not I thought he should take the days, to which I screamed, “Take them and run!!”. Ok, not really, but I emphatically said yes. So, what do you do when you have an unexpected four day weekend? You plan a trip, of course! (We live in an alternate reality, yes.) So this time, we chose Hong Kong, which is now known to us as, The Kong. Or alternatively, The Only Place On Earth That’s Hotter Than Bangkok Right Now.
Over the years, there’s been a lot of talk about diversity – or to be blunt, the lack of diversity – in the Foreign Service. So when I saw this article about the women behind the Iran deal, I had a little “I’m so proud to be female!” moment. I mean, not that I don’t think women are badasses everyday, but it’s nice to get a very obvious reminder, particularly when they’re diplomats. A little inspiring. Just a little.
Ok, so I said previously that if you haven’t heard of Phuket before, you should probably come visit us. Stat. The invitation’s still open.
